Understanding Cancer Prognosis

Dr. Kiran Kancharla explains how patients understand prognosis and the factors that affect it.

Irving, Texas – October 22, 2019 – A patient diagnosed with cancer will always have questions about their condition. They want to know how severe their disease is, and their chances of survival. Doctors will estimate your cancer status in what is known as prognosis.

“A lot of patients want to understand their prognosis because they find it easy to cope when they have enough information about their cancer,” says Dr. Kancharla. “The doctors will estimate your prognosis by comparing your condition with previous cases of the same type.”

Here are the factors that may affect your prognosis:

• Your type of cancer and its location in the body.
• The stage of cancer, which can be determined by tumor size and whether or not it has spread to other body organs.
• The grade of your cancer. This shows how abnormal your cancer cells look when viewed under a microscope. A cancer grade provides information on how aggressive the disease is.
• The particular traits portrayed by your cancer cells.
• Your age and health history before cancer diagnosis.
• How well you respond to treatment.

After a cancer diagnosis, you and your family face a lot of the unknown. A prognosis will help you understand your condition and what to expect from the disease and its treatment. In this way, you and your loved ones can make informed decisions. Some of these decisions include:

• The type of treatment best for your case
• If you want to be treated
• How best you can take care of yourself and manage any side effects from the treatment
• How best you can deal with the legal and financial matters

"If you decide that you want to know more about your cancer, your doctor understands your situation better and will discuss your prognosis with you,” says Dr. Kancharla. "Your doctor will explain your survival statistics and what they mean. You will be the one to decide how much information about your prognosis you want to know.”
