Dr. Kiran Kancharla explains the various benefits of breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI)

Irving, Texas, April 26, 2019– Breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) scans the metabolic activity of the breast lesions. It uses a radio-tracer and high-resolution gamma camera to identify breast cancers that are less than 5mm. The breast cancer is detected based on the different uptakes of the radio-tracer in the cancer cells as opposed to the surrounding breast tissue.

Breast-specific imaging is a new technology that is supplementing breast ultrasound and mammography examinations,” Explained Dr. Kancharla. “BSGI helps to detect breast cancer earlier and may reduce negative biopsy cases significantly.”

Here are the benefits that BSGI has over the other breast examinations:

It is the easiest and most economical way to examine women with cosmetic implants, dense breast tissue, palpable lesions, post-surgical scars and masses, and other lesions that cannot be detected through ultrasound and mammography.

BSGI does not require hundreds of images. It acquires 4 – 16 images which can be reviewed and interpreted rapidly by the radiologist. When absorbed by cells in the body, the tracing agent emits invisible gamma rays that can be easily detected and translated into digital images of the breast. Since cancer cells are known to have high metabolic activity, they absorb more tracing agent to reveal dark spots. The procedure takes approximately 40 minutes.

BSGI records the cellular function of the breast tissue very accurately and is quite useful when additional evaluation is necessary. Compared to MRI examinations, BSGI is cheaper and can be scheduled on the same day.

It can be used for patients who are very obese, claustrophobic and those who have pacemakers or those with other ferromagnetic implants, those with renal conditions which may be affected by the contrast agents in MRI exams.

“BSGI is ideal for locating cancers that may have been missed on ultrasound and mammography,” continued Dr. Kancharla. "This helps identify cancer early when it is treatable. Also, this examination can help to prevent the need for short-term follow-ups in some patients.”
