Dengue and chikungunya are becoming a major issue for many places with heavy downpours in different parts of the country. The rate at which they are spreading is so high that efforts need to be made even at an individual level to prevent its further spread. Read on to know a few things that you can do to keep the environment safe from dengue and chikungunya.
What is it?
Dengue and chikungunya are the two most common viral diseases that are affecting Indian masses. This virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquito and it can affect any and everyone irrespective of your age or gender. Following is a list of things that you can do with a little effort and be free from getting infected-

Wear clothes with full sleeves: The likelihood of getting mosquito bites increases if you are wearing cloths that leave most of your skin exposed. Hence, try to wear cloths that covers your body well and you can go out without much worry.
Cover all water spaces: To ensure Aedes mosquitoes do not get enough space to breed, cover overhead tanks, bathtubs and also drain flower pots, change coolers water at regular intervals. Draining, changing or covering water that has been sitting stagnant for a long time will prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Keeping even your personal space mosquito free can make a big difference in fighting against dengue and chikungunya.
Use insect repellents: To ensure you are safe from mosquito bites while being at home, use insect repellents like good night, kala hit or mosquito coils or apply odomos while going out. Make it a habit your kids to apply odomos before going to school or for other outdoor activities. Sleep under mosquito net even if you are using insect repellents.
Avoid mosquito bite: Avoiding mosquito bite is the first thing to do get rid of dengue and chikungunya. You should do all possible things to avoid mosquito bites and the same rule goes even for the ones already infected by the virus. By avoiding mosquito bites, an infected person can prevent the disease from transmitting to non-infected people around him/her.
Mosquito screens: Another thing that you can do to keep your home free from mosquitoes is to put mosquito screens on your doors and windows. In case you do not have screens, try to keep the windows and doors closed during evening time.
The proverb ‘Prevention is better than cure’ perfectly fits in the fight against dengue and chikungunya. These are two completely preventable diseases. All you need to do is to put a little effort to keep your home and campus safe. When every one keeps their premises and surroundings safe, the chances of dengue and chikungunya catching you or your family members reduces considerably. Keep the environment clean and safe and enjoy a healthy life.
