Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”- Hellen Keller

Volunteering is an activity where a person learns from his/her own experience by wilfully posing him/herself to do the given activity. India is a hub of various kinds of volunteering activities. The following discussion gives an idea about the various volunteering activities available in India.

Broadly they can be categorized into five types of volunteering. They include the traditional volunteering, internship volunteering, volunteerism, online volunteering and micro-volunteering.

Traditional Volunteering activities include the activities where people usually go to an NGO or an organisation which can support such activities and help in the process. The traditional volunteering activities have helped India the most in developing the social structure.

Internship volunteering is the type of volunteering that has seen a growth in the recent years. Here, students who have a break between the years or semesters are allowed to work on voluntary basis. They may be assigned one or more projects to be completed within the given deadline.

Volunteerism is a combination of volunteering and tourism which has gained a considerable amount of attention in the recent years. It provides a unique opportunity to travel around the places, explore the places, work with local people and so on. It is a unique opportunity to travel and at the same time volunteer to provide experience and other important learnings from the travel.

Online volunteering is made possible only with the help of the new age technology. It includes volunteering at the comfort of your home or doing an additional project apart from the office work. Projects may involve various activities which may include but not restricted to helping with social media, website or designing some material, mentoring youth, proof-reading articles, translations etc.

Micro-volunteering is the kind of volunteering where volunteering is done in either small groups or tasks are distributed in small units that can be completed in short periods of time. They involve completing small chunks of bigger projects.

There are several NGOs in India which provide this kind of volunteer works in order to uplift the condition in India. They aim to make the society better. Some of such NGOs include CRY, Maitri, Help Age India, Lakshyam etc.

One such NGO, Lkashyam aims at developing the condition of women and children in India. Since its inception in 2004, LAKSHYAM, a non-governmental organization, established itself for the welfare of the society, with a focus on the development of children, education, and women empowerment.

In fact, Lakshyam’s program ‘Rooh- Awakening Womens’ Soul’, meaning the spirit, is a strategically developed, three-tier project that aims at strengthening a woman’s demeanour towards life itself. Lakshyam’s struggle has so far enabled a significant thousand of women to support their families.

Apart from women development, child development is also an important aspect of a developing nation. One of their aims is to give children a conducive and progressive environment for their development without any shortcomings. That means a total self-development of a child right from the early stage. They aim to develop a society in which they want the highly qualified teachers to teach the students who have not been privileged in the society. By this, they aim to develop a standard system of education in India.

Lakshyam has become one of the few organisations in India which have worked hard simultaneously in various domains of child and women development.

Volunteering programs at the NGO is also available in abundant. They have focused on developing this program because, through this, they believe, will be able to develop more awareness and include more people in the program. This has enabled the organisation to strengthen over the years. It has thus, created a bigger impact on the society as a whole.
