When disputes go out of hand, it can lead to court battles. Nip the problem in the bud by having a good and effective conflict resolution in place.

Disputes and conflicts can happen in the workplace. Accept that it can happen to any type of business. You can’t control everything so the sooner you realize that, the less likely you are to get stressed out when conflicts arise. Once you anticipate conflicts, you will be able to handle them much better when the time comes.

1. Talk on neutral and calm grounds.

Find a good place to talk to the parties involved. They might not want to talk and voice their opinions when they are in a place where they fear judgment from others. It’s also important to use a calm tone and don’t immediately take on an accusing stand. Until proven otherwise, the parties involved should be treated as the aggrieved party.

2. Listen to both parties.

They say that there are three sides to every story. The first party, the second party, and the truth. Be impartial and make sure you listen to their sides of the story. It also helps to consult others when it comes to dealing with disputes in the workplace so they can also give their impartial advice on what can be done. You can create a dispute resolution team who will help handle these matters.

3. Understand where they are coming from.

Put yourself in their shoes. Are their complaints and grievances valid? They might be voicing out real concerns about the company. Hearing them out will also help you improve your operations and prevent future conflicts from arising.

4. Allow for open communication.

They should be made to feel like they can comfortably voice out their opinions without worrying that they will be fired for it. It’s good to have a mode of communication for these matters such as an email or a team that they can contact in case of disputes. This can be addressed in weekly or monthly meetings. They should also be encouraged to be more forthcoming with their opinions and grievances.

5. Keep it contained.

When it comes to major disputes, it’s better if the details are kept within all involved only to prevent the others from having opinions that could affect the involved parties negatively.
