Batteries are one of the major innovations which have incorporated other technologies to shape the modern industrial world. Despite the plethora of chemistries and applications, Lead acid or Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are the most prolific provider of stored energy on the planet. Lead acid batteries are widely utilized in vehicles and other applications requiring high values of load current. Its main usefulness are low capital costs, maturity of technology, and efficient recycling.

Advantages of VRLA batteries

Several VRLA battery types are available in the market, all offering benefits over the older technology-flooded cell type. Their common significant benefit is their use of recombination; oxygen released from the positive plates during discharge recombines with hydrogen, induced at the negative plates, to form water. This removes the regular water top-up maintenance requirement of flooded cells, while also preventing battery gassing. Hazards to personnel health or damage to nearby equipment are mitigated. Additionally, the batteries can be assembled as sealed units and stored or used in any orientation.

The valve present in the VRLA cell functions as a safety valve which opens when the concentration of hydrogen gas inside the battery increases dangerously high. Lead acid batteries are widely used in vehicles and other applications demanding high values of load current. Its main advantages are low capital costs, maturity of technology, and efficient recycling. Some of the benefits of VRLA cells are listed below:

Advantages:

● VRLA battery is maintenance-free and no periodic water refilling is mandated
● Lowered need for ventilation
● The capacity range of the VRLA battery is high (12000 Ah)
● VRLA batteries will have a longer life. The life span of these batteries will be around 10 years
● Feasibility for float charge function with the same voltage of the cells, to continue in using existing charging tools
● VRLA batteries are economical

Disadvantages

The VRLA batteries demand an additional cost to supply periodic resistance checks or a BMS added. The BMS provides continuous monitoring of the battery’s health, which extends its life expectancy and prevents unsafe temperatures, by entitling full control of charging and discharging. An energy cell is designed to provide a relatively smaller amount of power over a more elongated period. VRLA batteries are limited by their design as exclusively energy cells. The working life of a VRLA battery is typically 3-6 years which is more expensive at the time of purchase.

● Low specific energy; poor weight-to-energy ratio.
● Slow charging: It takes 14–16 hours to charge fully.
● Need for storage in a charged situation to prevent sulfation.
● Repeated deep-cycling decreases battery life
● Watering needed for the flooded type
● Transportation restrictions for the flooded type
● Negative environmental impact

VRLA battery have preferred UPS energy sources offering their reliability, low initial purchase cost, and management ease.

Since 1998, Power Logic has had several types of UPS that deliver reliable power and with real-time power management software, we can control and auto shutdown multiple servers. Besides that, Power Logic also has a wide range of UPS for industry use as three-phase True online UPS and N+X Modular type UPS.
