Bei der Topvariante packt Toshiba nicht nur reichlich Arbeitsspeicher, sondern auch eine Top-SSD ins Notebook: Die ist mit 954 Gigabyte Speicher vergleichsweise groß und dank PCIe-Technik richtig schnell. Das zahlt sich nicht nur beim Start von Windows oder Programmen aus, sondern sorgt auch für ein sehr hohes Tempo beim Überspielen von Daten zwischen Notebook und einer externen SSD: Bis zu 512 Megabyte pro Sekunde fließen hier durch das Datenkabel, wenn eine Thunderbolt-SSD wie die Samsung X5 angeschlossen ist. Über USB sind bis zu 320 Megabyte pro Sekunde drin. Nachteil der kompakten Bauweise: Aufrüsten klappt leider nicht – die SSD ist nicht für den Besitzer zugänglich und der Arbeitsspeicher bereits voll bestückt.
Nervige Spiegelungen ade: Das Portégé kommt mit einem leicht mattierten Display. Und einem ziemlich guten: Der Bildschirm ist schön scharf, gleichmäßig ausgeleuchtet und stellt Farben sehr genau dar. Selten bei matten Displays: Das ­Toshiba hat einen Touchscreen. Damit bieten sich dem Nutzer gleich drei Alternativen zur Maus, denn neben dem üblichen Touchpad hat das Portégé noch einen Mini-Stift (Trackpen) in der Tastatur, um den Mauszeiger zu steuern. Was das bringt? Die Finger können auf der Tastatur bleiben, das spart Schnelltippern Zeit. Die freuen sich zudem über eine Tastatur mit gutem Schreibgefühl, müssen aber auf einen Ziffernblock verzichten – und damit leben, dass einige Tasten, da­runter Entfernen, Bild nach oben und die Pfeiltasten, kleiner als bei ­einer Standardtastatur ausfallen.

Dünnes Gehäuse, dicker Prozessor: Da kann es schnell heiß im Notebook werden, doch die Lüfter im Toshiba pusten die Wärme schnell raus. Die Unterseite erwärmte sich im Test auch nach längerem Betrieb nur um 22 Grad. Leider sind die Lüfter auch gut zu hören – zumindest, wenn wie bei der Lautstärkemessung das Netzteil dransteckt. Dann schaltet das Notebook Prozessor und Akkuaufladen auf volle Power. Ergebnis: Schon mit Office-Programmen lärmen die Lüfter mit 2,5 Sone, unter Volllast sind es bis zu 3,7 Sone – das nervt nicht nur den Sitznachbarn im Zug, sondern stört auch die Konzentration. Dass es auch viel leiser geht, zeigt das Portégé, wenn es Videos abspielt (0,7 Sone) oder wenn der Nutzer das Netzteil abzieht. Dann säuseln die Lüfter mit 0,5 Sone – in leiser Umgebung kaum zu hören. Der Netzteilstecker kann recht lang abgesteckt bleiben: Im Akkubetrieb hält das Toshiba rund viereinhalb Stunden durch. Ein guter Wert für ein Superleichtmodell (Notebookgewicht 1.064 Gramm). Schade nur, dass das Netzteil ein vergleichsweise gewichtiger Brocken ist (353 Gramm). Da das Toshiba per USB-C aufgeladen wird, lassen sich aber auch leichtere Netz­teile anderer Hersteller verwenden.
