Die bisherigen iPhone-Modelle knipsten meist bessere Fotos als die Samsung-Geräte. Im Labor-Test holt das iPhone X bei der Bewertung der technischen Fotoqualität und im Sicht-Test bei Tageslicht mit 2,3 eine gute Note. Damit gehört es zur Spitze der besten Foto-Smartphones. Das Galaxy S9 bleibt mit Note 2,4 knapp dahinter. Die Südkoreaner schraubten beim Galaxy S9 kräftig an der Kamera: Durch eine Bildzusammensetzung aus gleich zwölf Aufnahmen sollen Fotos um 30 Prozent weniger Bildrauschen als beim Vorgänger zeigen. Das Galaxy S9 ist das erste Smartphone mit einer variablen Blende (bei Tageslicht: f/2.4, bei wenig Licht: f/1.5). So sollen unter schlechten Lichtbedingungen hellere Schnappschüsse gelingen. Das bestätigt der Labor-Test: Bei wenig Licht erreicht das S9 dieselbe Bildqualität wie das iPhone X. Vorteil gegenüber Apple: Mit der Super-Zeitlupe fängt das Galaxy S9 – wie übrigens auch das Sony Xperia XZ Premium – 960 Bilder pro Sekunde ein. S9-Besonderheit: Es visiert das Motiv im Vorfeld an. Bewegt sich dann etwas, löst der Kamerasensor sofort aus. Das iPhone X nimmt ebenso Zeitlupenvideos auf, aber nur mit maximal 240 Bildern pro Sekunde. Lässt man die Zeitlupenfunktion außen vor, hat Apple bei der Kamerawertung insgesamt die besseren Note.

Das Galaxy S9 bietet gleich mehrere biometrische Funktionen: So sitzt auf der Rückseite (diesmal unter der Kamera) ein Fingerabdrucksensor. Mit der Frontkamera lässt sich das eigene Gesicht scannen. Samsung nennt die neue Entsperrmethode „Intelligent Scan”. Die Technik kombiniert die aus den Vorgängern bekannte Gesichtserkennung mit dem Iris-Scanner des Smartphones und erzeugt ein dreidimensionales Abbild des Gesichts. Auch Apple setzt beim iPhone X mit Face ID auf eine Gesichtserkennung, verzichtet sogar ganz auf einen Fingerabdrucksensor. Der Intelligent Scan von Samsung entsperrt das Galaxy S9 bei Tageslicht ähnlich flott wie Face ID beim iPhone X, bei wenig Licht allerdings funktioniert auch im S9 nur noch der etwas zickige Iris-Scan. Im Vergleich funktioniert Apples Umsetzung zuverlässiger, ist zudem technisch aufwändiger und garantiert mehr Sicherheit. Zudem nutzt Apple die Gesichtserkennung nicht nur zum Entsperren, sondern genauso bei Käufen im App Store. Der Punkt geht an Apple.

Beim Preis setzte Apple neue Maßstäbe: Mit offiziell 1.149 Euro für die kleine Speicherversion (64 Gigabyte) und 1.319 Euro für die 256-Gigabyte-Variante ist das iPhone X richtig teuer. Das Galaxy S9 ist zwar auch nicht ganz günstig, aber immerhin mit 849 für die kleine (64 Gigabyte) Version unter der 1.000-Euro-Marke. Interessant: Seit dem Verkaufsstart sind beide Smartphones deutlich im Preis gefallen. Das iPhone X ist von 1149 Euro (für die 64 GB-Version) auf deutlich unter 1000 Euro gefallen, vereinzelt sogar schon für 920 Euro zu haben (Stand: Juni 2018). Beim Samsung Galaxy S9 ist der Preisverfall sogar noch stärker: Von 849 Euro auf rund 530 Euro. Damit geht der Punkt klar an Samsung!
