Dover NH, February 2, 2015 - Dr. Anne Kalter is pleased to offer minimally- invasive surgery for 95% of uterine fibroids. Approximately 25% of women have these benign growths in the uterine wall. Fibroids, or myomas, are derived from smooth muscle tissue, and are round and more dense than the surrounding muscle tissue. Most women with uterine fibroids have no symptoms, however, fibroids can cause prolonged heavy bleeding that can lead to anemia. Large fibroids can cause pain and pressure on the bladder and rectum. Fibroids may impair fertility or be responsible for miscarriages.

It is important to be evaluated by the physician, and to discuss the full breadth of treatment options available. There are a number of medical treatment options depending on if a woman is actively trying for pregnancy, or if she has completed child-bearing.

One of the options for treatment is surgery. Fibroids may be removed from the uterus (myomectomy), or the entire uterus may be removed (hysterectomy). If fibroids grow large enough, the surgery to remove them can become more difficult, and a woman may opt for a robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedure. Dr. Kalter was one of the first physicians in the area to adopt this technology, and has been performing this procedure since 2006. Gynecologists from the Seacoast as well as Maine refer their difficult cases to Dr. Kalter for surgery, as she has performed more Robotic hysterectomies than any other gynecologist in the Seacoast, and patients have enjoyed good outcomes. She states, “The robotic approach gives the surgeon ten times magnification and a 3-D view of the uterus. The robotic assistance offers more precision, flexibility, and dexterity than is possible using other techniques. Recovery is quick, and complication rates are low. I am happy to be able to offer women with significant uterine fibroids the opportunity to have their minimally invasive surgery locally; travel to a tertiary care center is rarely needed now.”
