The Zappus 2013, the sports meet , came to pass on the 6th and 7th Dec 2013 on the grounds and courts of GEMS Akademia Interntional School that were readied splendidly to hold this event which is named after Konstantinus Zappus the reviver of the Olympic games in the 19th century , a greek athletic festival considered to be a forerunner of the modern Olympic games .He is known for his entrepreneurship , benefaction and most importantly his contribution to sports .

Today the world in its entirety is fraught with that c, an be defined as mechanical distant from anything that would back up a value system. In such a situation which can sometimes be viewed as dismal – sports can help us , especially the young students , to learn the invaluable qualities of leadership, tolerance and sharing of team spirit . Sports play a significant role in the field of education to be precise , they are a part of education as they are synonymous with learning . They have the capacity to teach , mould and show someone the right path to tread in order to be a true human being.

The present civilization indeed requires human beings who are humane enough not to get carried away by detrimental influences. Sports as an agent , strengthens body and mind of an individual and enables the person to face boldly the challenges of life which almost always is an assortment of – thorns and roses , hopes and despair , good and bad. Sports and Academics are complementary and in so doing make education complete. Such education is a liberating force that helps us to break away from the age old fetters of caste , creed , religion , prejudice and ignorance . Sports are invariable a weapon to defeat and distance elements that disfavor the building of traits within us which would stand us in good stead . Games are the highest means of recreation. They fill us with joy and zeal , vitality and enthusiasm which in turn help us to remain unaffected when adverse situations of any gravity make their presence in life .Sports teaches us to maintain equanimity and humility in both victory and defeat and promote discipline and fair play .

On the 6th and 7th of December 2013 , canopies , tents ,banners , flags and streamers could be seen all around the fields and courts . Officials , participants and even spectators appeared to be busy . Some were working , some gearing up for the matches and still others that were enjoying the visual treat . The dazzling wintry sun in the blue firmament delighted all who were present while a gentle breeze caressed and soothed . It was a sense of merriment with a difference for all felt anxious , that was ubiquitous. All together 17prominent schools of the city participated in Zappus 2013 –
We were honoured to have with us Mangal Singh Champia as our Chief Guest ,.He is an Indian archer . Since his university days he has been on a winning spree bagging gold and silver medals in the 70 m and 90 m individual and team events . He won the bronze medal in the team competition at the 2006 Asian Games . At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing he finished his ranking round with a total of 678 points that gave him the second seed for the final competition bracket . In the same year he received the – “ Best World Score Award ‘’ by World Archery FITA 2008 , and the ‘Arjuna Award ‘ was conferred on him by the President of India in 2009. We also had with us Kapil Shankar of Meerut as Guest of Honour . He is an upcoming national level archer since 2010 he has played and won medals . In the National Games 2011 of Jharkhand he won the silver medal . At the 47th World Archery Championship 2007 in Bellack , Turkey , he secured the 9th rank , thus making his remarkable presence felt.

And the first day of Zappus 2013 which was laden with activities , commenced with a song that embodies the spirit of the event . A dance was performed by the zealous students of GEMS Akademia International School. There was a song sung by the students of the school . The Director / Principal of the school said a few words to grace the occasion . She spoke about the significance of sports in life and how it paves a way for one to reach ones goal . She quoted William Ward – “ Adversity causes some men to break , others to break records “.

Before the matches , the Chief Guest made a speech of inspiration, encouragement , devotion and with that the day of games and sports began.
