This report is about knowing about the different lung function tests that will help asthma patients. And a small brief about the test procedures.

Australia, 15th January 2021: Lung function tests help measure the human body’s breathing with the physician or health care person’s help to diagnose and monitor asthma. There are different types of lung function tests. The physician might use combinations of tests that will help to confirm an asthma diagnosis. A lung function test will also help the medical person tell a person if the asthma medicines or the lung expander device are working and lung health.

Types of lung function tests

Lung function tests are done before and after inhaling the medicine or the device, as they help open the airway. If the person's lung function is improved a lot by using the medication or the breathing device, he or she has asthma.

Lung function tests require a person to exhale or inhale using a device or a mouthpiece. The simple tests carried at the physician’s chamber, he or she might tell the patient to stop taking medicine or the breathing device before the appointment.

● Spirometry: it is the recommended test which confirms asthma. In this test, the patient breathes into a mouthpiece connected to a device known as a spirometer or to a laptop. It helps to measure the amount of air that a person can breathe in and breathe out and its flow rate. The person will take a very deep breath and then exhale it out forcefully.

● Peak flow meter: In this test, a small, handheld device where the patient breathes into to measure the rate at which the patient can force air out of the lungs. During the test, the patient breathes in deeply and then blows into the device as hard and fast as possible. If a person is diagnosed with asthma, the device used at home helps track the condition, but it can’t be used to diagnose asthma.

● FeNO test: When a person has asthma, the airway becomes inflamed and produces nitric oxide. The test helps the physician know how much inflammation is there the patient's airway is, thereby measuring nitric oxide.

● Provocation test: If the other tests are standard, but still the person is experiencing asthma signs and symptoms, the doctor might test that produces a mild reaction under laboratory conditions. If a person doesn’t have asthma, then he won’t react to the test.

The lung function tests are the most common type used. However, other tests diagnose asthma depending on age, symptoms, medical history, and more.
