AVG AntiVirus (previously just AVG, abbreviation of Anti-Virus Guard) is a family of antivirus software developed by AVG Technologies, a subsidiary of Avast Software. It is available for Windows, macOS and Android.


AVG features most of the common functions available in modern anti-virus and Internet security programs, including periodic scans, scans of sent and received emails (including adding footers to the emails indicating this), the ability to "repair" some virus-infected files, and a quarantine area ("virus vault") in which infected files are held.


AVG is still one of the bigger names in anti-virus software that offer a decent alternative to the paid for services. Giving you a decent amount of protection via the free options, which doesn't include the paid-for Internet Security 2015 service, AVG is often at the top of the food chain.


While in 2014 we disagreed with AVG's somewhat pushy ad strategies, with copious amounts of banners and frequent pop-ups bombarded its user with often useless drivel, it's not too intrusive this time around. While the ad banner is still there, and can be found in all parts of the free software, it's not too obnoxious. While it isn't quite as streamlined as Avast's 2015 software version, it's still not all that bad nonetheless.


If you're willing to actually spend some money on the service, the paid-for Internet Security 15 offers a bunch of features such as file scanning via a cloud-based system, which looks at all downloaded files before they even appear on your PC. For the purposes of this review, we're solely analysing the free service that AVG offers, and comparing that to other software providers too.
