Spanish La Liga: The Cradle of Soccer in Spain

The Spanish league system is actually a system based upon football clubs that are divided in categories starting from lower division football clubs to the highest Premier division.

 
La Liga Soccer is the name of the premier division football competition in Spain. It is also referred to as Spanish La Liga by English speaking people as they cannot pronounce the name used in Spain which happens to be Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional or more commonly as Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP). The Spanish league system is actually a system based upon football clubs that are divided in categories starting from lower division football clubs to the highest Premier division.


La Liga is the top level football league in Spain


It is the premier division league or the La Liga Soccer that remains the centre of attraction. It comprises top 20 clubs in Spain based upon their [performance in the competition. Lowst three teams in a year get relegated to Segunda Division that is a lower rung of football clubs in Spanish football while the top three performing clubs in this division get a chance to play in Spanish La Liga. The premier league is administered by the LFP that also operates the Segunda Division of football. There is Segunda Division B and then Tarcera division. Below this division, there are lower divisions but one thing that is noticeable with football at all levels in Spain is that the game is always attacking and entertaining.

Spanish La Liga is a prestigious event in European football

In La Liga Soccer, a team gets three points for a win, one for a draw, and no points for a loss. At the end of the championship, the team with the highest points is declared the winner of the league. The Spanish league is watched with great interest by football fans around the world and it is one of the most respectable football tournaments in the world after World Cup. As it is, Europe happens to be a football crazy continent and along with European Championship and UEFA Cup, EPL and Spanish La Liga are considered the most important events in soccer calendar in Europe.

The top three teams in the league automatically qualify to be a part of the UEFA championship while the fourth ranked team has to play a playoff to qualify for the championship. There were only 10 clubs that took part in the inaugural La Liga in 1929 with the number of teams increasing in the coming years. Today 20 teams compete for top honors in the league and so far 59 clubs have got a chance to play in the top Spanish league.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico happen to be the only teams that have taken part in all championships of Spanish La Liga so far. While Real Madrid has won the league a record 31 times, Barcelona is not far behind having lifted the cup 20 times. These two teams are so strong that they can beat many national sides on their own. Many international football stars have played for these teams in the past and even today, stars getting a chance to play with either of these two clubs in La Liga Soccer consider themselves lucky.
