If you want to encourage your child to read then you need to read to them every day even when they are an infant. Children and books make for a great way to get them to go to sleep at night. You can also read to your child after a bath or before a nap. Try to spend about twenty minutes every day reading to your child. If they lose interest just pick it up at a later time. Another way to engage your child in reading is to ask questions. As you read the story look at the pictures and try to point out letters and shapes. When you do this, your child will begin to read on their own before you know it.

Reading together is also important. Don’t just hand your child a book and leave him alone. Take your child to a book shop and allow him to pick out books that are for him alone. Allowing your child to pick out their books in a book shop will give them more interest in them. Sit with your child as he/she reads and let him hold the book and turn the pages even if you are reading to him. While reading point to the words to help your children follow along with you. If you know that he knows a word pause for him to say it.

With children and books repetition is the key even if you are able to recite the book by heart. Repetition is what allows your child to begin to repeat and recognize words. Also it will help him to begin to remember and learn the structure of the story. Picture reading is another thing you can do with your child. Before she is able to read words on her own she can become familiar with the words that go with the pictures. When your child has begun to memorize a book allow them to recite it by heart. Just be sure to guide them through the book while they are reciting the text. This will also help your child get a basic understanding of the text.

With children and books your child’s learning comes more than just from their minds it is an integration of physical, social and creative skills. All children have different strength and weaknesses. You can over come a weakness in reading as well as improve aptitude by encouraging your child to read.

To have a successful reading program you need to establish rules, set a routine and make it a ritual. This is both for you and your child to make reading something to look forward to and not a chore.

Books help your child develop their own identity. Reading helps develop her imagination. When your child is comfortable with themselves they will have more confidence. Confidence and character will help your child handle challenges as they grow. Reading can be the key to your child’s future. Go to a book shop today and pick out some children’s books and start reading. When our child grows up they will always be glad that you taught them to read and took them to the book shop.
