Remember the ferociousness of Hurricane Sandy, as it ripped through New Jersey seven years ago? Unfortunately, the residents who had survived the hurricane, by witnessing the horrific scenes of devastation, are scarred forever. The aftermath of the storm left behind the raw emotions and uncertain futures for thousands of people. The survivors stood amid the wreckage of what had been their beautiful homes and businesses. However, the disaster also brought along with it, many stories of heroic rescues and random acts of kindness. Apart from anger and despair, there was a sense of gratitude for the tremendous help that came from the American Red Cross.

One of the survivors of Hurricane Sandy, Andrew Lesnak, continues to be grateful to this organization for their restoring some sense of stability in his life, while everything else seemed hopeless and confusing. He was so appreciative of their compassion as an organization, that he decided to dedicate himself on helping other victims in need by volunteering for the American Red Cross. As unfortunate as his experiences were, it has served him well in assisting the victim’s in a variety of ways…. The help ranges from obtaining financial assistance, to “just being there” to offer comfort in their times of despair. The homes will eventually be built, but the horrible memories of Hurricane Sandy are still vivid for Andrew and others like him.

Thankfully, the volunteers from the American Red Cross are credited as a “rapid response organization” during disasters and are recognized for their efforts to offer humanitarian relief. And, because of the therapeutic benefits that Andrew has experienced working in this charitable endeavor, he has decided to devote his life towards community service. His focus is helping the victims obtain affordable housing, employment opportunities, and improving on their mental health issues due to the lasting trauma of the storm.
