[Artarmon, 13 December 2017]—One of the most detailed researches about the economic and emotional effects of traffic is IBM’s Commuter Pain Index (CPI). The CPI shows a rating between one and one hundred based on the amount of “pain” caused to commuters in traffic.

The CPI showed that Sydney has the highest score at 40, while Brisbane had 34 and Melbourne 32. The index found that four out of five Australians found commuting by car frustrating and stressful. Another report titled the Austroads Congestion and Reliability showed that Sydney claims to have some of Australia’s slowest-moving roads. The report stated that some of those roads in Sydney include Land Cove Road, Homebush Bay Drive, Epping Road, the Cahill Expressway and Harris Street at Pyrmont.

Marion Terrill, Program Director of the Grattan Institute Traffic, conducted a study that used Google Maps to track three hundred driving routes in both Sydney and Melbourne. The study discovered that the Southern City is the most congested, even if it has a smaller population.
