Fuel and lubricant purification systems play an essential part in the functioning of fuel or lubricant. Oil purification and oil polishing systems are used to remove the contaminants from lubricant to increase its lubrication efficiency. These systems mainly employ different processes, like filtration, centrifugation, etc. to remove solid or liquid contaminants.
Fuel or lubricant polishing is basically the process of cleaning or filtering hydrocarbon fuel or other kinds of oil. Major contaminants, like water, sediment or microbes, can be malicious to the clean combustion action of a fuel. Therefore, removal of these contaminants is a mandatory action for ensuring the perfect working or combustion of fuel. The contaminants present in oil or fuel are generally called fuel bugs.
Contamination level can vary from negligible to heavy. In the case of a negligible contamination, treatment is not required at all. For moderate contamination, treatment is required since it can be a little bit malicious. But in the case of moderate contamination, the treatment is comparatively easier. For heavy contamination, very careful action is required. Thus, more complex processes are done for purification here. Also, the purification must be done as soon as possible. Otherwise, the case will become worse and may even cause engine failure.
Generally there are two methods employed for the purification of oils. The first one is oil polishing and the second one is oil filtering. Oil filtering is the removal of suspended particles using a porous material or sheet. This is generally used for removing solid contaminants. The oil to be filtered is passed through the filtering material or sheet. Particles greater than the size of pores cannot pass through the pores. Thus, the suspended particle is retained. This is how the filtration action occurs. When water is the contaminant, this can be done using some filter media that absorbs only the water.
Polishing of oil uses actions like centrifugation, coalescers or filters to remove the contaminants. These contaminants can include both solid and liquid contaminants. Water, being heavier than oil, can be removed excellently using centrifugal action or coalescers. The non-combustible particulate matters, like sand, insects and other macro or micro substances can also be removed using this method.
Oil purification is done using various kinds of machinery or equipment. These include vacuum dehydration purification or filtration systems. Vacuum dehydrators are very efficient at lube oil water removal, oil varnish mitigation, lube oil gas removal or particle contamination removal (using micro glass filters having high efficiency). These systems can be applied in lube and hydraulic reservoirs in power plants, paper mills, steel mills, transformer oil, refineries, gearboxes and any other mechanisms or places where the lube or fuel oil used is contaminated.
There are several great companies offering services related to purification and polishing of oils and other lubricants. The machineries used for these services are also available easily in the market. The vacuum dehydration oil purification system is mainly used here, as described earlier. These days, all these services can be easily availed using the internet.
