Malta, Idaho – For millions around the world struggling with problematic sexual behaviors (PSB), the twelve-step treatment plan is a common and often recommended approach. However, a recent study conducted by the Department for Social Work at Malmö University in Sweden sheds light on the limitations of these programs and why they may not, in fact, be sufficient for long-term PSB recovery.
Understanding the 12-Step Method
The twelve-step method is a structured recovery program widely used in peer support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. It emphasizes community, accountability, and personal responsibility in overcoming addiction. In recent years, the number of individuals seeking support through twelve-step programs has increased significantly, as many who self-identify as having problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) prefer it as an alternative to conventional medical or therapeutic services.
Despite its popularity, the Malmö University study reveals little scientific evidence to support the program’s effectiveness. Out of eight empirical studies analyzed, only two quantitative and one qualitative study showed slightly positive results. This suggests that this structure plan alone does not result in sustained healing.
The Need for Tailored Care
The study’s findings add to the growing consensus that many experts in the field, such as Dr. Matthew Hedelius, director of Paradise Creek Recovery, advocate for a more nuanced approach to treatment. They argue that a one-size-fits-all method, like the twelve-step program, cannot address the multifaceted issues contributing to PSB.
As Dr. Hedelius points out, “I am not surprised by the results of this study because nearly 90% of individuals diagnosed with PSB have a history of trauma. This really highlights why we need to look beyond traditional methods and focus on what’s driving these behaviors at their core.”
A Holistic Approach to Recovery
Trauma-informed care has shown far more promise in treating compulsive sexual behaviors. This approach recognizes the underlying issues and addresses the emotional and psychological wounds that often fuel compulsive behaviors.
Facilities such as Paradise Creek Recovery use trauma-informed care as a basis of their residential treatment programs, offering residents a variety of therapeutic methods, including individual therapy, group sessions, and peer support. By allowing individuals to engage with their past traumas in a safe, supportive environment, those struggling don’t just learn how to process the underlying emotions. They also understand their triggers and develop personalized coping strategies for long-term recovery.
