Renée Roth-Hano was born in Mulhouse, Alsace, France and moved to Paris in 1940, the year of the defeat of France by German armed forces. As life became more and more oppressive under Nazi rule, she fled to Flers, Normandy where she and her sisters resided with Catholic nuns.The family reunited after France’s liberation in 1944. After graduating high school in Paris, Renée emigrated to New York and worked as an au pair. She went on to attend college and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Social Work.

13 North Irregulars follows her other autobiographical books, Touch Wood: A Girlhood in Occupied France and its sequel Safe Harbors, and focuses on her work in an inpatient hospital ward for recovering alcoholics. In its lively first-person narrative, Renée Roth-Hano takes readers behind the scenes at an urban psychiatric hospital, and on a journey toward recovery – both her patients’ and her own. Throughout the layered narrative, she reflects on her traumatic experiences growing up during the Holocaust, while at the same time, seeking to help her clients heal from their own emotional wounds.
