San Antonio, TX. April 7, 2021. Family, work and other social convention can cause fatigue, overexertion or low energy levels. However, when exhaustion is accompanied by headaches and dizziness, it is important to seek medical help as this is often a sign consistent with anemia.

Low levels of iron

Anemia is a condition where blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency anemia is perhaps the most common type of anemia. In this case, there are likely to be too few red blood cells as a result of low levels of iron. Red blood cells need iron in order to carry oxygen around the body.

It is possible to have iron deficiency without necessarily being diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia.

However, they will often go together. Without proper gastroenterology services, iron deficiency often leads to anemia. This mainly happens as the body exhausts its iron reserves commonly known as Ferritin. It is important to note that anemia can occur due to other reasons apart from iron deficiency.

Anemia and iron deficiency in women

Anemia is very common in non-pregnant women of reproductive age. On average, one in three women worldwide, and one in eight women in the United States suffer from it. 40% of women normally become anemic during pregnancy and 20% of these cases are related to iron-deficiency.

Testing for anemia

There are different types of tests for anemia. There are basic tests that one can do in their own home, for instance, checking under the eyelid. A whitish color is often an indication of anemia. However, it is always advisable to get a proper professional test conducted by a doctor.

If you have noticed signs related to anemia, you need to consult a doctor and get a simple blood test to clear up any suspicions. Though anemia is often checked by checking the skin and eyelids, confirmation of the diagnosis can only be done through a blood test.
