“Simply doing difficult asanas or postures will not take you there. Yoga is about breaking your habits, not your body.” – Dr.Bharat Thakur
When you start yoga classes or an exercise routine after decades of living a sedentary lifestyle, you are in for a surprize. Your body is conditioned to minimal amount of physical activity and limited usage of muscles and joints. Your brain is also used to a specific routine. Basically, good or bad habits are already set. Identifying your limitations is the first step towards bringing a change in your health and lifestyle. Artistic Yoga can help you do just that and more leading you to make that journey from lethargy to liveliness.

FEEL THE RUSH

The first week can be tough on your body. Yoga has numerous postures designed to contract and stretch the muscles in a systematic manner. Postures designed for muscle contractions can lead to lactic acidosis in the body. Sore hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, lower back and shoulders are common complaints. Though the pain is only temporary, the effects of an Artistic Yoga last far beyond the 3-5 hours that you invest every week.

Several hormonal changes occur in the body which are proven to be extremely good to counter stress, reduce inflammation, improve immunity and stimulate the growth of new brain cells. Plenty of endorphins are released in the body which elevate mood and energy levels. There is also an increase in the production of growth hormone which stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration. Studies have shown that yoga can have an almost immediate effect on the brain and can help calm and rejuvenate it. This boosts thinking and memory power.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

1. The best ways to avoid aches and pains is sufficient stretching. At Artistic Yoga we use passive and active stretching to ensure minimal soreness and increase feeling of lightness in the body.

2. Drinking plenty of water, eating light and getting adequate sleep on the days you do class can also be of tremendous help.

3. You must listen to your body and go easy in the first week. Inform the teacher if you feel discomfort.

4. You must ensure that you attend classes regularly in order to condition your body to the intensity of the class and stay motivated.

5. Discuss your goals and limitations with your teacher which will help them guide you better.

Regular practice of yoga can contribute drastically to your overall health and well-being. The challenge lies in not giving up and maintaining a consistent routine.
