CHUO-KU/TOKYO - Japan Commodity Exploration today announced that it has successfully completed the dynamic positioning assessment for its service operation vessel.

Japan Commodity Exploration has developed technology that will allow its vessel to navigate safely through the seabed off the Ogasawara Islands and collect samples of minerals.

The operation was executed by the vessel’s autonomous software while under the supervision of Japan Commodity Exploration’s experienced Engineering team using artificial intelligence and motion sensors.

The autonomous operation is one of the unique features of Japan Commodity Exploration’s underwater vessel, which has been in development for the last 2 years and the hard work has now paid off.

Japan Commodity Exploration Chief Geological Officer, Mr. Bruce MacDonald commented on the assessment saying “We have looked into safety, increasing workability and reducing operational expenses, and we expect that the implementation of our autonomous underwater vessel will lead to a significant reduction in service and maintenance costs.”

“The next phase of our project is to focus on further developing functions of the autonomous navigation and control functionality. We are pleased with the results of these tests and we tested the vessel’s seakeeping behavior and position keeping in challenging environmental conditions and have given us great insight into the performance of the vessel,” added Bruce MacDonald, Chief Geological Officer of Japan Commodity Exploration.
