Becoming a registered dietitian isn't possible without first completing an accredited, supervised practice program and passing a national examination.

Jamie Yetman Finnicum already possesses over a decade of work as a professional dietitian. Her work began as an extension of her education at Ohio State University in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Jamie Yetman Finnicum completed her accreditation and supervised practice program at St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake, Ohio where she worked as an outpatient dietitian. "From 2000 to 2002, I educated people on the importance diet plays in recovery and maintaining health," states Jamie Yetman Finnicum.

To work as a professional dietitian, Jamie Yetman Finnicum had to pass a nationally recognized exam; "I passed the national exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration," says Jamie Yetman Finnicum. Once she became a registered dietitian and licensed professional, Jamie Yetman Finnicum started advising people on both proper diet and exercise. "It was in September of 2000, that I became licensed and certified, it was a profound moment," recalls Jamie Yetman Finnicum.

Since becoming a registered and licensed professional, Jamie Yetman Finnicum's work led her from Cleveland, Ohio to Raleigh, North Carolina. "I received my North Carolina licensure in May of 2002. Just two months afterward, I started a position with Fresenius Medical Center," says Jamie Yetman Finnicum.

While she has been hard at work assisting the dietary needs of people on dialysis, she joined the North Carolina Council on Renal Nutrition. "I provide comprehensive care to patients with chronic kidney failure and try to improve their quality of life," says Jamie Yetman Finnicum.

All the work Jamie Yetman Finnicum completes as a working professional does not mean she is finished with her own education. "In the field of dietetics, your education is never truly complete. Many health professionals are required to continue with educational courses and it is no different for dietitians like myself," says Jamie Yetman Finnicum.

Although she spends hours working with patients, Jamie Yetman Finnicum participates in the Commission on Dietetic Registration's mandatory recertification system. "I am required to complete 75 continuing education hours every five years in order to maintain my dietetic registration," explains Jamie Yetman Finnicum. Her recertification cycle will be completed in 2016 and Jamie Yetman Finnicum regards her Continuing Professional Educational requirements as a way to ensure competency in dietetics.
