Increasing bad debt and delayed investment for small business in the UK points to a slow-down in the months ahead.
Signs that the economy might be heading for a downturn are apparent amongst SMEs in the UK, as per the latest research report. It has also been revealed that bad debt – that is, the worth of unpaid invoices written off by every business, has risen to £20,403, an increase of over 70% compared to last year.
Recent research also indicates a downturn in investment amongst SMEs, along with an average planned investment falling from £101,920 to £65,782 in the previous month.
According to a Nucleus spokesperson, “SME activityis often an indicator of wider economic performance. When SMEs take on more work, such as hiring employees and investing in machinery and equipment, it’s reflected in the performance of the UK economy.”
He added, “Nevertheless, right now there are also signs that businesses are delaying their investment decisions. Moreover, data showing the increase in bad debt amongst SMEs can point out a build-up of pressure in the supply chains all over the country.”
28% of SMEs said that the uncertain economic outlook in the UK has been preventing them from investing, which is followed by increasing expense and a desire to build-up company cash reserves. On the other hand, 20% said that uncertainty over Brexit has been preventing them from investing in their business.
