You might have heard of landscaping as an umbrella term, but what you might not be aware of is the distinction between hard and soft landscaping and the different roles they play in creating exceptional outdoor spaces in Leamington Spa, Warwick and Solihull.

What is hard landscaping?

One way of viewing hard landscaping is through the lens of a house builder. Before they can add the smaller, yet still essential parts of the house, such as the windows, they need to build the foundations using heavy and durable materials; and it’s very similar to hard landscaping.

The concrete and timber used in foundations and house frames are just like the stone, rock and masonry utilised in hard landscaping for paths, walls and edging materials. The materials help define the overall space and blend it into the environment. Hard landscaping is pivotal in ensuring gardens have good drainage and don’t suffer from erosion, creating the perfect bedrock for soft landscaping across Leamington Spa, Warwick and Solihull.

What is soft landscaping?

If hard landscaping is the foundation, then soft landscaping represents the garden’s parts you can alter on a whim. Elements such as the plants, bushes, lawns, dirt and even water features exemplify the soft aspects of landscaping. You can replace or add to them without altering the overall composition of the outdoor space.
