How To Book Your Gorilla Trekking Permit.
To track gorillas, you must have a pre-booked gorilla tracking permit from the relevant country agency to book the gorilla permit (Uganda Wildlife Authority for Uganda or ORTPN for Rwanda) or book the permits through alocal tour agency.
Rwanda gorilla permit cost $1500 per person for non-residents, $450 for East Africa foreign residents with supporting work permits and $250 for residents. In Rwanda your gorilla permit requires that you be at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM or before for the gorilla tracking activity
A Uganda gorilla permit costs $600 per person for non-residents, $500 for East Africa foreign residents with supporting work permits and $100 for residents. You need to report to the park registration office at 7:30AM.
Location of the gorilla parks
Gorilla trekking can only either be done in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley with an estimate of 400 mountain gorillas and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the southwestern Uganda on the border with Congo and Rwanda in the Virunga Conservation area covering an area of about 33.7 sq. kilometers or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park which is located in the northern part of Rwanda spanning on a 160 sqkm area and its home to the critically endangered gorillas sheltering the highest number of gorillas in the Virunga Conservation area
Planning your Transport to the Gorilla Trek in Rwanda and Uganda:
In both Rwanda and Uganda, you will require a 4×4 vehicle to go to the gorilla parks that you can hire at an approximate fee of $150 per day excluding the fuel but including the driver costs. However, if you are using a tour company like gracious tours, all the transportation is catered for on the overall package fee which gives peace of mind. The gorilla safaris’ time is very unpredictable and you may as well take the entire day. For this same reason also have with you a packed lunch for the day, plenty of drinking water, rainproof clothing (you are trekking through a rain forest and any day it can rain).
