The emergence of pre-engineered building industry can be attributed to rapid strides in metallurgy on which steel buildings primarily depend. Pre-engineered buildings are made up of components manufactured in factories and then transported to construction sites. Though most will understand pre-engineered buildings as metal buildings, the fact is that it can also include concrete structures that are made in factories and then shipped to the sites for assembling. Typical examples where pre-engineering is widely used is in road and bridge construction in India and around the world. Using PEB in India for housing sectors is relatively new.
History of pre-engineered Metal Buildings
In its strictest sense, pre-engineered metal buildings are not something new; it has been around for a long time, but only in recent times it has begun to receive due attention. The practice of using metal structures can be traced back to the 1700’s when it was primarily used in the construction of fireproof buildings for mills to stock agricultural produce and textile goods.
In the 19th century, steel buildings began to grow in importance because of a vast demand for gold rush pioneers. It was at this time that skyscrapers made of steel began to rise.
Though the utility of steel buildings are much recognized, it emerged as a strong segment when the need for bigger structures such as stadiums and bridges started to look up when concrete structures became more expensive and time-consuming to develop. Thus today, pre-engineered steel buildings are much in limelight because of their extreme utility and durability. It looks like that there is no escaping from it for a long time to come.
India in Pre-engineered Construction
India’s building industry is supposed to be one of the world’s oldest and highly developed business segments and it is common to see Indian engineering companies taking up a project in other parts of the world. It is therefore natural for the Indian construction industry to develop technologies and utilise it in their construction practices. There are scores of PEB manufacturers in India who have developed technologies that meet international standards.
