Color Change in Eyes is the New Buy

Pioneering technology and clinical research have joined hands and brought in a wave of techniques to improve ocular fitness.

The same technology that was once used (and still is) to improve vision permanently has now gained an extra feature – eye color change. That’s right; laser surgery is now additionally used to change eye colors permanently. It can make a brown eye blue. A team of engineers, ophthalmologists, and other medical professionals now provide counsel and explanation on such surgeries and suggest the right way to go about it.

The method is photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Its first application (to improve vision, not color change) took place in 1988. This surgery (excimer laser treatment) was performed by Dr. Marguerite McDonald. The excimer laser itself was developed by Dr. Stephen Trokel in 1987. PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) went on to be patented by the US in 1995. Now, clients from around the world consider coming to the USA for this surgery, because of the medical expertise level.

In normal vision correction surgeries, the excimer laser will emit an ultraviolet light (UV – cool beam) and this beam will mostly correct any pertaining refractive errors (errors that disrupt vision) in the cornea.

Melanin, the same pigment that controls skin color, also controls eye color. Fewer amounts of melanin production will give one’s eye a lighter shade and vice-versa. Melanin production is known to be controlled by hereditary factors or genes. In some cases, mutations in the gene controlling eye color can cause color change too. The absence of melanin causes albinism (skin or eye or both).

This pigment called melanin is present in the iris. The iris is what will further be responsible for color change. Low-intensity lasers are directed at the eyes and melanin is destroyed. With no melanin, the color produced will be light.

Only those who have brown eyes can undergo eye color laser surgery and will always obtain blue eyes. If other colors are desired, iris implantation is a better surgery.

Iris implantation surgery involves placing a colored silicone implant where the iris is supposed to be, through a slit in the cornea. This surgery requires cutting open the cornea and suturing it after implantation. This is not the same in eye color laser surgery.

The cost of laser surgery can go as high as 10,000$ but what is suggested by experts to carefully scrutinize the ophthalmologists. One must check if the ophthalmologist knows the risks and if they are considering other health issues.

Irex Laser is a team of innovative scientists and reputed ophthalmologists who will provide sound knowledge and will make laser eye color change a comfortable experience for their clients.
