Courtley Health and Safety are now responsible for the workplace welfare of 12,000 staff working for 138 public and private sector firms and have taken on two new advisers and one administrative worker to cope with the increasing demand.

Courtley, which is based at Knowsley, near Liverpool, and also has a centre in southern England, runs courses and works as a consultant for firms which do not have their own specialist health and safety staff.

The new advisers and a PA will free up more time to devote to the programmes they run, the firm says.

Founder Steve Wallace, who started the business in 1995, said: “It’s always nice to welcome new people into the company and good to see us growing, which comes about because we’re a name that people trust and know that they can rely on to do a good job.”

Courtley conducts a number of courses at its purpose-built centre in the north and its southern base in New Addington, Croydon, Surrey.

Among those offered are the CITB site supervisor’s safety scheme (SSSTS), the PASMA training schemes which deal with safety in using and erecting access towers and the IOSH managing safely course to help delegates understand practical health and safety considerations in the workplace.

Staying abreast of all changes in health and safety legislation is a vital part of the job for Mr Wallace and his staff. It means they stay on a constantly rolling schedule of Continual Professional Development (CPD) programmes.

He said: “We have to be constantly up-to-date with all the associations for project safety, we can’t stop. We also have our own little programme where we train our own staff once a week, I think it’s very important to make sure we designate time for in-house training.

“We did a recent one where everyone had to think about our responses if there was a major incident at our own premises. I wouldn’t advise other people do something that we didn’t believe in ourselves.”

Although they offer a comprehensive range of courses, they don’t simply offer off-the-peg solutions to health and safety training. Courtley say that each company that comes to them will be offered advice on the best and most fitting training to match the firm’s best interests.
