In den letzten Jahren haben wir an unterschiedlichen Stellen gelesen, dass sich Nutzer ein Retina Display beim MacBook Air wünschen. Aus welchen Gründen auch immer, hat sich Apple jahrelang dagegen gesträubt. Als Alternative gab es das 12 Zoll MacBook und das 13 Zoll MacBook Pro (jeweils mit Retina Display).Nun hat Apple auch dem MacBook Air ein Retina Display verpasst. In unseren Augen eine gute und richtige Entscheidung. Das Display besitzt genau wie beim Vorgänger-Modell eine Größe von 13,3 Zoll (Bildschirmdiagonale: 33,78cm). Das Retina Display bietet eine native Auflösung von 2560 x 1600 Pixel bei einer Pixeldichte von 227ppi. Dabei setzt Apple auf ein LCD-Display mit LED Hintergrund-Beleuchtung und IPS Technologie.

Das Retina Display beim MacBook Air ist eine absolute Bereicherung – auch wenn es nicht Apples bestes Retina Display beim Mac ist. Die Geekbench 4 Werte liegen bei 4.263 im Single-Core-Test bzw. 7.854 im Multi-Core-Test. Viel beeindruckender finden wir die Lese- und Schreibgeschwindigkeit der verbauten SSD. Die Ergebnisse des Blackmagic Disk Speed Tests haben wir euch als Screenshot eingebunden.Kleine Randnotiz: Im Rahmen der Oktober Keynote und der Vorstellung des neuen MacBook Air hat Apple nur in einem Nebensatz erwähnt, dass es sich um einen Intel Prozessor (8. Generation) handelt, den der Hersteller verbaut. Bei der Präsentation des neuen iPad Pro mit Apple A12X Prozessor hat Apple hingegen in epischer Breite über die Leistungsfähigkeit des Prozessors gesprochen. Dies zeigt in unseren Augen ganz klar, wohin die Reise geht. Apple hat längst erkannt, dass Intel nicht mehr der ideale Prozessor-Partner ist. Allerdings kann der Hersteller aus Cupertino nicht von heute auf morgen Intel den Rücken kehren. Ein solcher Übergang muss von langer Hand vorbereitet und geplant werden. Wenn man sieht, wieviel Leistung mittlerweile in den Apple eigenen Chips steckt und wie stark Apple in den letzten Jahren im Bezug auf Intel aufgeholt hat, so ist klar, dass der Hersteller aus Cupertino in den kommenden Jahren den Übergang von Intel-Chips zu den eigenen Chips einleitet bzw. intern schon eingeleitet hat. Noch ist der Übergang zu früh, allerdings wird es sicherlich keine fünf Jahre mehr dauern, bis Apple den ersten Mac mit eigenem Prozessor und eigener Grafikeinheit auf den Markt bringt.
