Monsoons or Chaturmaas are not fit for organizing any Pooja or prayer under the Hindu Mythology. This is a 4 month period starting from Ashad Shukla Ekadashi to Kratika Shukla Dwadashi. The former signifies the point when God sleeps and the latter denotes the Devo-utthaan or the point of time when God wakes up. The god who sleeps in Yoganindra or divine sleep is Vishnu who is responsible for managing the world.
The sun makes his journey south. The days become shorter and nights longer and colder. The earth is filled with snakes and worms that come out during this season. It is believed that dwellers of the nether realms namely Asuras come to take back whatever is taken back from them. According to a legend, this is the time when Lord Vishnu goes to Pataal-Lok to reside with his great devotee Bali.
After the monsoon, the earth is covered with greenery. This marks the arrival of the son of Devi i.e. Ganesha, Vighnaharta- the destroyer of all woes. Ganesha is supreme amongst all the Ganas of Lord Shiva. All his Ganas are Yaksha, Pretas, Bhutas, and Brahma-Raakshas are deformed and horrible in appearance while Ganesha is cute and his countenance a sight to behold.
The Shiva is the God of gods. He embraces all the animate and inanimate beings without any discrimination. He is considered destroyer and creator of the world. He is a teacher who guides lost souls to attain spirituality. Ganesha is the manifestation of the ego of the Jiva or living being. The Jiva is blinded by his ego and doesn’t recognize the lord himself. The Jiva exchanges harsh words with him. Here, the lord cuts off the head of the ego and the being gets enlightened.
The whole legend of Shiva cutting Ganesha’s head rests on the mythological fact that Devi resides in the Muladhara Chakra and she breathed life into a turmeric paste which she used to guard her against unripe minds. Turmeric here symbolizes the Muladhara Chakra represented by Lord Ganesha and she resides in the Kundalini form there. This is the reason why Ganesha is considered as the lord of wisdom. His ego was severed by Shiva and replaced by an elephants' head which is one of the most intelligent beings in the animal kingdom.
