Westfield, NJ, August 8, 2013 – The primary focus of general dentistry at the Westfield Family Dentist office has always been on prevention as the best way to maintain good oral health. Dentists still strongly recommended twice-yearly visits and dental cleanings as part of basic prevention. As new research emerges, however, dental professionals are increasingly focused on the role that prevention plays not only on good oral health but also on one’s general health.

“In recent years we have learned a great deal about the role that oral health plays on our overall physical well being,” remarks Dr. Thomas Streko, Westfield Family Dentist. “Proper oral hygiene and routine maintenance are vital to maintaining a patient’s good oral health. But even diligent at-home oral hygiene practices can’t remove all plaque and other residue that builds up on teeth over time. It is simply impossible for the patient to reach every crevice of teeth where bacteria thrive. Without regular professional dental cleanings, these bacteria can eventually
lead to periodontal disease, which in turn may lead to serious oral health problems that can
impact the patient’s general health.”

Periodontal disease occurs when the gum tissue surrounding teeth becomes infected. As the disease progresses, bacteria grow above and below the gum line causing gum tissue to separate from teeth. Current research shows that without proper hygiene and prevention, bacteria present with severe periodontal disease can enter the patient’s bloodstream. This is a serious general health concern because the presence of bacteria in the bloodstream can lead to heart disease, respiratory disease and stroke.

For this reason, dentists continue to advocate prevention as the best possible way to keep teeth and gums healthy. Prevention includes regular dental checkups and cleanings, but patients are now also being educated about the value of diligent oral hygiene and proper diet to minimize the danger of decay, gum disease, and potential health risks.
