HOMEMADE DOG TREATS
In the same way that no house is a home unless you smell fresh-baked cookies, no dog house is a dog home unless there are homemade treats for your dog. Of course, homemade dog treats aren’t what you would call necessary, but it’s like the icing on the cake. It’s a final touch to make to your home dog-friendly, and it’s one that your dog will love.
FURNITURE COVERS
If you haven’t got room for another piece of furniture, you can always go with a cover. Choose a durable, water-resistant cover that you can throw in the washing machine whenever it gets dirty. Slip covers and duvets are also a good idea to keep your couches and quilts free of dog hair and dirty paws.
DOGGIE-DESIGNATED FURNITURE
If you don’t want your dog to be on your nice furniture, but your dogs think they should be able to lounge on the couch with you, opt for a compromise. Choose a piece of furniture that fits in with your design style that you don’t mind having your pet sit on.
DOG WINDOWS
Dogs love to be outside. And when they can’t be outside, they still like to look outside. If you’re building or renovating your home, and you want to do something simple to make it more dog-friendly, installing a few windows at your dog’s eye level would be a great idea. Your dog will love being able to watch the birds and squirrels from the great indoors.
AVOID POISONOUS PLANTS
To keep you pet healthy and happy, you’ll want to make sure that you steer clear of any poisonous plants—indoors and out. Take a look at this helpful infographic before planning your garden.
INDOOR POTTY
We’ll be honest, the idea of emptying out a doggie potty is totally unappealing. But you know what’s even more unappealing? Having to clean up an accident. If you don’t like the idea of keeping your dog in a kennel when you’re at work, or if you’re just a little late getting home from shopping sometimes, this little project will save you some hassle.
HANDHELD SHOWER HEAD
If you can’t afford to put in a doggie-designated bath station, or you don’t know how to go about it, a handheld shower head will help you out a lot, too. This one will do the trick. It’s easy to install, and makes giving the dog a bath easier for everyone involved.
BATH STATION
For people who groom their dogs themselves, building your own dog bath station is fantastic. It makes grooming a breeze, and it’s so much better than having to clean up the entire bathroom when you’re finished.
RAMPS FOR SENIOR DOGS
Some dogs, particularly older ones, have trouble going up steps. Building a ramp is a simple, DIY-able project that you can do to make it easier for your senior pup to get around. It eases the impact made on the joints to help your dog maintain mobility.
BUILT-IN FEEDERS
This is a clever way to help declutter your home. Built-in feeders are an easy upgrade to make. We especially like this one, which can be pulled out during meal times, and tidily pushed back in when not in use.
DOG-PROOF TRASH CANS
Keep your food scraps-loving dog out of the trash by investing in a dog-proof trash can. This trash can is a good option. Simply step on the pedal to open it up, and when you’re finished, the lid clicks closed, so your dog won’t be able to reach the tasty garbage inside.
DOG GATE
If you want to keep your furry friend confined to one area of the house—like, say, if you were cooking in the kitchen, and you didn’t want your dog to get underfoot—a dog gate will make things easier on you.
