This week, New York State police will crack down on speeders as part of the “Speed Week” Enforcement Campaign. As they patrol the highways, they will also pull over drivers for other traffic violations.
Ira Slavit, Partner, Levine & Slavit PLLC, says motorists should be aware that law enforcement will be out in full force ticketing anyone who violates the rules of the road. “Now is the time to be mindful of your driving habits and not break any rules,” Mr. Slavit says. “State police will be on the lookout for anyone in violation of these rules. The actions you take may result in serious injury or death to another person.”
During the campaign, state police will be patrolling the highways in both marked and unmarked vehicles. In addition to speeding, motorists will be pulled over for driving while distracted and/or impaired, not wearing a seatbelt and violating the Move Over Law. Last year, state troopers issued 20,952 total traffic tickets, including 10,478 for speeding, 516 for distracted driving, 375 for violations of the Move Over law, and arrested 172 people for drunk and impaired driving.
In New York State, fines for a first-time speeding conviction range from $45 up to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit to $600 by more than 30 miles per hour.
Mr. Slavit urges anyone who is injured or has a loved one who was injured or killed by another’s reckless driving should seek legal assistance immediately. “Anyone who has caused a crash or fatality behind the wheel because of their refusal to follow the rules should be held accountable for the damage they have done,” he says.
