What is a Locums Physician?

Although they’re not always referred to by that name, a locum tenens physician is someone who provides medical care on a temporary basis.

A locums physician is a physician who is traveling from one place to another, which is an arrangement made by the physician with their employer. With this arrangement, the physician is supposed to write a post for an online travel journal.

A locums physician is an individual in temporary or short-term employment with a temporary or short-term medical specialty. In North America, these physicians must complete a medical licensure examination in order to have authority to practice, and they may be recognized as board-certified specialists in the particular specialty they have been responsible to oversee. They may be employed by the facilities the specialty operates, or by private practice.

Although they’re not always referred to by that name, a locum tenens physician is someone who provides medical care on a temporary basis.

Locum Tenens is the term used when an individual or organization places a temporary replacement worker. A locum is often well-experienced, highly-skilled personnel, who can provide for an illness, vacation, or other absences. In virtually all industries, locum agencies are available. And in the medical field, it is common to use locum agencies like locum tenens to fill local vacancies.

THE BENEFITS OF LOCUM TENENS

Patient care agencies often work to alleviate staffing shortages. In return, these agencies can provide permanent healthcare workers to hospitals and other facilities in need. But the convenience also comes with a cost. Permits, licensure, and certification are costly and not offered to every healthcare worker.

Locum tenens refer to a physician coming in for a temporary assignment, typically to fill an empty slot in a patient's regular physician’s schedule. This includes physicians from an existing healthcare company that may be recruiting. There are many advantages to this. For example, a hospital has to only pay for one physician in the place of a second as well as the locum physician's time. The hospital is also able to offer a lower rate of pay to the locum doctor to fill.

Working As A Locum Tenens Physician

The primary benefit of locum tenens jobs is that they offer individuals opportunities to test the waters and see if their physical location of residence is what they want. Doctors can do this for periods ranging from a few months to years. In general, a locum tenens job is a temporary or short-term assignment to which an individual is asked to fill a gap in a particular clinic or hospital.

The trust of your patients is important. A quick way to build trust is to treat every patient as if they were your family member. This can have a big impact on recruiting. In fact, when asked what they thought was the most important quality of a physician, patients rated confidence, professionalism, and ethics as the top three.

The job market is tough. The employment website Medscape says that temporary employment, or locum tenens, jobs account for nearly 6% of all employment in the US. That’s nearly 3.4 million jobs. These are jobs that are similar to permanent physicians.
