September, 12--Amity Law School on 12th September 2017, organized a Guest Lecture on Goods and Services Tax Act, 2016 to enhance awareness amongst the faculty members and students about the basic objectives and principles of GST. Mr Balesh Kumar ((Principal Additional Director General) & (Directorate General of Goods and Service Tax Intelligence) and an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 1987 batch kindly assented to grace the occasion. An alumnus of the Delhi, School of Economics, Delhi University, Mr Kumar was one of the members involved in the drafting of the GST, Act. Mr. Kumar has served in Customs & Central Excise Department in various capacities and is currently posted as Special Director Enforcement Directorate.
In his welcome address Prof (Dr) P B Sharma (Vice Chancellor) emphasised the need for understanding the new Laws so that they can be properly implemented in letter and spirit. The Lecture was attended by the respected Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, HODs /HOIs of other Institutions along with the Faculty and Students of Amity Law School (ALS)

Mr. Kumar while addressing the gathering said that the GST, Act has been rolled out with a view to establish economic federalism and the end consumers will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this historical tax regime. Mr. Kumar also explained that by replacing the multiple indirect tax regimes with GST, the cascading effect of these taxes would be eliminated.

Mr. Kumar explained the GST, Act brought all his experience and knowledge into play to explain the basics of GST in its simplest forms. He clarified that introduction of GST would bring about transparency and reduce tax evasion, which would result in the reduction of prices and inflation. The Lecture was followed by an open house, where the students and faculty members clarified their doubts and also put questions regarding the practical implication of GST on consumers.

Vote of thanks was given by Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.) (Director Amity Law School) who had shared that PM’s office has called GST as Goods and Simple Tax.
