[SANDY, 30/04/2015] - Heart to Heart Adoptions, a non-profit adoption agency based in Utah, offers post-placement support for both adoptive parents and birth mothers. This service consists of assistance with information transfer and filing for a Mutual Consent Registry.

Post-placement refers to the transactions after the relinquishment of the child. After helping birth mothers and parents progress through the challenges prior and during placement, the agency will also offer support for the processes thereafter.

Communication among Birth Parents, Adoptive Parents and Adoptees

The agency encourages semi-open adoptions so they can assist with information transfer through communication with the birth mother and the adoptive parents. For many generations, closed-adoptions were the preferred mode among adoptive families. This was due to the fear that open adoptions could lead to birth parents tracking down the adoptive family and taking back the child.

In the 1980s, adoption modes have given way for more information disclosure and openness. “Today’s adoption laws are very clear – once the adoption is finalized, the adoptive family is recognized as the child’s legal family,” shares the agency.

With a semi-open adoption, the agency can facilitate communication among birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptees.

Reuniting Birth Parents and Adoptees

A Mutual Consent Registry is a state-run registry whose goal is to reunite the birth mothers and their children when the adoptees reach the age of 18. Registrations are strictly voluntary and should be agreed on by the two parties.

Adoptive parents can sign the Openness Agreement in the placement papers, which serves as promise that they will inform the adoptee of the Mutual Consent Registry so he or she can register upon turning 18.

The agency’s service includes covering all registration expenses for birth mothers and assisting them through the registry process.
