“Herguan” may seem like an unusual name for an American university. That’s because the word is Chinese. It means “open gates.” The founding president of Herguan University, Dr. Ying Qiu Wang, spent his life researching how to treat patients of acupuncture and oriental medicine by “opening the gates” to greater circulation, infusion of energy, and management of pain.

He talks in his book “Herguan Theory” about the confluence of energy from the Universe with energy from other systems, such as the system we call the human body, to create results that equal more than the sum of its parts. His treatmentshave resulted in improved wellness of many patients. He believed that the concept of opening the gates and allowing natural energy to flow from one system to another system would lead to improvements in many ways – more productive and higher functioning organizations, groups, societies.

Today Dr. Wang continues his research and innovation. From his“Herguan” theory, he developed Herguan University in 2005 to “open the gates” of learning for students desiring to study science, technology, engineering, and math to meet the growing demands of today’s high technology world.

Professional accreditation and High quality education

Situated in the City of Sunnyvale, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley, is a small and growing private college called Herguan University (HGU). The University began graduating students in earnest during 2009 and today enrolls more than 600 full time students per year.

Herguan University was accredited in 2014, and the next semester experienced a 100% growth in student enrollment. Herguan University offers two Master degree programs: Computer Science and Business. Within those programs are several specialties: Software, Cloud Computing and Mobile Applications, and a new specialty coming soon in Big Data. The Masters in Business includes specialties in Administration and Project Management.

To optimize performance Herguan University faculty are experts in their field, with years of work experience, bringing state-of-the-art knowledge to the classroom to share with students. Since the first graduating classes, almost two thousand students have graduated and are working in companies throughout the United States, and particularly Silicon Valley. Usually 100% of Herguan University graduates have jobs unless they continue their education.

Our graduates work for hundreds of different companies including some in internationally well-known businesses such as: Google, IBM, Cisco, Yahoo, Facebook, Apple, Net App, etc. Over the years, HGU’s graduates have climbed the ladder into management jobs, project leadership, and other positions demonstrating their abilities.

Herguan attracts students from all over the world. The University enrolls students from India, Nepal, Russia, other Eastern European countries, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Pakistan, some Latin American countries, African countries, and other locations. They all find a reasonably-priced, high quality education at Herguan University that will prepare or enhance their employability in the business and high-tech marketplace.

Based on the work of the founding president, HGU students are encouraged to exercise their creativity and innovative spirit as they study and pursue their careers.

Social Service

Dr. Wang promotes social services. He encouraged medical groups to go to the community and give volunteer medical consultations. He also prepared to offer scholarships for people from all over the United States to learn Herguan theory so they will gain a new perspective.

From a doctor’s point of view, earth is a living organism, and it’s important to build a sustainable system using green energy from the air, the sun, and the wind,instead of extracting fuel from the planet endlessly.

He offered to help many non-profit organizations to host events to educate people how to build a sustainable harmonious system, and he also gathered a team to form new non-profits such as the CANSDRAC (CA New Solar Drought Relief Action Commission) trying to bring the resources and develop a successful delegation plan.

So, from an idea and a theory has grown a University in Silicon Valley that values its students and faculty, emphasizes teaching and learning, and prepares students that employers are eager to hire. The contributions of Herguan University students are immeasurable. But it is clear that the community, the region, the country have all benefited by what this small and growing educational institution has contributed.
