How to Select Glass for Your Windows and Doors

Posted May 24, 2017 by guardianhurricane

In choosing the right glass type, it is important to choose base on the kind of performance you need and the code requirement. For tropical areas, it is best to choose tinted glass or low-e glass.

Wondering what type of glass you should get for your windows or doors? Take note of the following glass types and their functions when making a selection.

Laminated glass

This glass type is composed of two sheets of glass bonded together. Since it has protective interlayer, the glass will be held in place in case it shattered. Laminated glass is the best glass option as a primary hurricane barrier against impact. In areas where hurricane-resistant construction is required, laminated glass is normally used. Automobile windshields and skylight glazing also used this type of glass.

Insulated laminated glass

It is an insulating glass with laminated outboard. Insulated glass is often called double glazing because it uses two or more panes by adding an extra single pane of glass to the laminated glass unit. These glass panes are sealed with air space or filled space in between. This is to prevent condensation or fogging. Despite being slightly higher in price, it offers more enhanced energy performance. This is more useful in areas with colder climates.

Low-E glass

Low-e glass uses low-e or low emissivity coatings. These coatings are developed to minimize ultraviolet and infrared light that can pass through the glass window or door. Low-E coatings separate heat energy and light energy. This would enable heat energy to be reflected back to the source while at the same time allowing natural light to pass through. This benefit makes it more energy-efficient as it reduces your energy bills.

Tinted Glass

Also known as heat absorbing glass, tinted glass is made by adding color pigments to the glass. It absorbs solar radiation, a process called heat absorption. It reduces not only heat transfer but light transfer as well. If the glass is not tempered, the thermal stress due to heat may cause the breakage of the glass.

In choosing the right glass type, it is important to choose base on the kind of performance you need and the code requirement. For tropical areas, it is best to choose tinted glass or low-e glass. If you want an energy-efficient one, choose insulated laminated glass with low-e coating.
