Will Hong Kong Immigration Be Affected By Extradition Bill Crisis?

The proposed new extradition bill in Hong Kong has led to protests across the territory. We take a look at the impact it could have on Hong Kong immigration.

Many individuals who were planning to immigrate to Hong Kong are in a state of anxiety and confusion after seeing the news about recent events. A number of demonstrations are taking place across the country to protest against the extradition bill that was introduced by the Chinese government.
In order to understand whether or not the crisis will impact the immigration process we need to understand a little bit about Hong Kong’s background. The autonomous territory was a part of the United Kingdom, until June 30th 1997, after which it was handed over to the People’s Republic of China as a part of the agreement between the two countries. During the time it was a British colony, Hong Kong saw people from all over the world settle in the territory and improve its infrastructure and economy. This made it one of the most coveted destinations for immigrants and expats from Asia and other continents as well.

What Is The Extradition Bill And Will It Affect Hong Kong Immigration?

The extradition bill has proposed that certain criminals from Hong Kong would be eligible for extradition to mainland China. The bill has not been received well by the general public in Hong Kong and has caused many protests not just in Hong Kong but from across the world as well. However the new bill and the controversy surrounding it is highly unlikely to affect Hong Kong immigration. Immigration to Hong Kong from countries like India is mostly among the highly skilled or semi-skilled workers, who have requisite educational and experience background and are expected to contribute to the economy. The bill which is an issue regarding the Hong Kong government and citizens who are being held under trial for various crimes, is not likely to have an impact on the general economic functioning or immigration process of the country.
