At the best of times, there’s plenty of tension for Newfoundland photographer Megan Smith when she’s hired to shoot a wedding.

The wedding Smith worked on Saturday had several added elements of difficulty: 11 horses and riders from the RCMP’s Musical Ride, a tight space and very limited time.

“We had just five minutes,” Smith said in an interview.

That photo has gone viral.

“It’s going through the roof,” Smith said. “It’s insane. I could never have imagined it would have gotten all of this attention.”

The photo was shared on Facebook by Andrew Smith Photography on Saturday and has already received 1,890 likes and 256 shares.

Smith, 30, has run a photography business based in St. John’s with her husband, Andrew, for the past five years.

When they heard the Musical Ride was booked to perform in tiny Mount Pearl, RCMP officer Steve Howlett and his bride, Naomi, suggested the idea of a wedding photo with the equestrian team.

“I was really nervous when they first pitched the idea to me,” Smith said.

On the wedding day, the Musical Ride was running a little behind schedule, which amped up the pressure.

The space was tight and the time was even tighter.

“I didn’t have time to fool around with lighting,” Smith said. “Believe it or not, we’re actually wedged between two buildings; the space was really tight.

“It was actually where they were prepping for the show,” she said.

She used a 35-mm lens on her D700 Nikon to get all of the horses into the photo and prevent distortion.

“I really love the 35-mm lens,” she said. “I love it even more now.”

As an added bonus, the Mounties in red serge smiled and the horses stood majestically as the groom and bride kissed.

“They were all so accommodating,” Smith said.

The couple has photographed 31 weddings so far this year and that number is taking off.

“We’ve gotten about seven wedding inquiries in the past 24 hours,” Smith said.

“I feel really, really lucky that I was asked to be a part of the wedding. It’s definitely a true Canadian photo.”
