For many, autumn is the time of year that brings about new trends including comfy knitwear and scarves galore. But what patterns and prints are becoming popular in the second half of this year?

Faux fur coats have often been a back runner in the fashion world but they are finally beginning to make their mark. Faux fur gilets in plain colours such as baby pink, tan and black are easy to wear and pair with jeans or skirts and are perfect to layer on colder days. If you’re up for looking a bit more daring, try faux fur blazers. These come in a variety of animal prints and can be dressed up to make a statement, plus they offer a warmer alternative when the weather gets colder.

Heeled ankle boots are always a wardrobe staple but this season it’s all about suede and fringing or the leather and buckles look. Tan suede fringed boots are great with blue jeans to pull off a cowboy chic outfit and they’re super comfy to wear around, especially if you’re walking between lectures. For a grungier look, black leather buckled ankle boots are slightly edgier, and ones with a heel can bring your outfit from day to night effortlessly while still remaining comfortable.

If boots aren’t your thing, loafers have been huge all summer and are a trend that isn’t going away any time soon. Tassled loafers in particular are currently everywhere and you can get them in almost any colour. This season, metallic loafers are making their way onto shelves with silver becoming an increasingly popular colour choice alongside more subdued browns.

The 90s grunge style has been working its way onto the scene for the best part of the last year and the time has finally come for checkered shirts to make a comeback. To stay on trend go for a large check pattern and make your shirt oversized for added effect. Make sure to have a look in the men’s section too as they often have a bigger selection of checkered shirts than women’s sections do! If you want to rock a checkered pattern but shirts aren’t your thing, checkered shift dresses are increasing in popularity, or try a chiffon sleeveless shirt for a girlier, less grungy feel.

Blue denim is a classic but the era of the skinny jeans might well be over. Autumn has brought around 70s flares and blue denim is the easiest way to wear them. However, denim isn’t just regulated to jeans so try something different this season in the form of a denim shirt, jacket or even a dress. If you want to try flares but aren’t into denim, velvet or a blue china pattern are an alternative to really pay homage to the 70s. Wear them with a roll neck jumper to not only rock the 70s but also stay warm throughout autumn when the weather gets chilly. Buy a fitted roll neck jumper to wear with flares as not only are they super comfortable but it’ll give you more shape on your top half and allow you to play around with wider kick flares on the bottom.
