Michigan (https://www.inkpressions.com/), a Midwestern state of the United States, is surrounded by four Great Lakes with more fresh water than any state in the USA. There are more than 11,000 inland lakes across its upper and lower peninsulas earning it the nickname of “The Great Lakes State”. Lake Michigan lies to the west, Lake Indiana and Lake Ohio to the south, and Lake Huron and Erie to the east. Its largest city is Detroit which is known as the seat of the American Auto Industry and is also the original headquarters of the Motown Record Company in Hittsville, USA. The capital of Michigan is Lansing and one of the more famous points of interest is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Three other major cities besides Detroit include Flint, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids.

The Mackinac Bridge in Michigan that connects the upper and lower peninsulas is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, spanning five miles across the Straits of Mackinac. Michigan has the longest coastline of any state with the exception of Alaska. Other nicknames for the state include The Automotive State, America’s Cereal Capital, Winter Water Wonderland, and The Wolverine State even though wolverines were never found in the area. The nickname came about as a result of fur traders who brought wolverine skins to the region. The state of Michigan was named after Lake Michigan and the word ‘michigan’ comes from the Chippewa Indian “micigama” which means “great water”. The Upper Peninsula, known as “The Land of Hiawatha”, was the setting for the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The Song of Hiawatha”.

The major industry in the state’s capital, Lansing, is the production of automobiles and parts. Michigan is also a leader in the production of steel, a major component of cars. The only state that produces more iron ore than Michigan is Minnesota. Detroit is known as “Motor City” and “The Automobile Capital of the World”. The first automobile assembly line was developed here by Henry Ford who dropped the cost of his Model T car to a price that most families could afford. If you would like to see how cars are made, visit Michigan.

Apart from automobile production, Michigan is also a leading producer of fruit such as cherries, apples, and peaches as well as food with its cattle farms and field crops. It is also the chief producer of dried beans in the country. Battle Creek, MI, is the leading producer of breakfast cereals in the world. The state’s waterway between Lake Superior and Lake Huron is one of busiest in the world and its ports are bustling with ships constantly carrying produce from its farms and factories.

What to See in Michigan?

As one of the leading tourist states, about 22 million people visit Michigan every year to enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes, recreation facilities, and resorts. Ski Michigan has beautiful ski slopes and in February the "Suicide Hill Ski Jumping Tournament" is held in Ishpeming at Iron Mountain. For the adventurous, there is hunting, fishing, hiking, and swimming aplenty.
