Unter Last macht der verbaute Lüfter deutlich auf sich aufmerksam. Das Geräusch ist auch von einem leisen Pfeifton durchzogen. Da dieser nicht hochfrequent ist, erachten wir ihn als weniger störend. Im Normalbetrieb stehen die Lüfter die meiste Zeit still. Das gefürchtete Spulenfiepen konnten wir nicht feststellen.

Wird konstant Rechenleistung benötigt, steigt dabei auch die Gehäusetemperatur an. Wir messen bis zu knapp 50 Grad Celsius im Bereich oberhalb der Tastatur. Auch auf den Knien kann es mit der Zeit warm werden. Sorgen müssen euch diese Temperaturen nicht bereiten.Die verbauten Lautsprecher sind nach vorne ausgerichtet. Als Stereo-Paar funktionieren sie am besten, wenn ihr das Notebook auf einer Tischplatte vor euch stehen habt. Die Abstimmung ist zwar gelungen, jedoch fehlt es uns an Lautstärke. Besser, ihr schließt vernünftige Kopfhörer an.

Beim Testgerät handelt es sich um ein Business-Notebook; vor diesem Hintergrund enttäuscht die Qualität der Webcam. Sie liefert, ausreichend Umgebungslicht vorausgesetzt, brauchbare Aufnahmen, doch kommt es sehr schnell zu verrauschten Bildern. Im Videomodus hat die Kamera Probleme, schnelle Bewegungen einzufangen. Bei einem testweise durchgeführten Video-Gespräch über Skype lobte unser Gegenüber dafür die gute Sprachqualität der Mikrofone. Ganz großes Kino: Nach dem Lösen von zwölf Schrauben, für die ihr lediglich einen handelsüblichen Kreuzschraubendreher benötigt, gewährt euch das Portégé Zugang zum dicht von Bauteilen besiedelten Innenraum. Ein paar weitere Schrauben später haltet ihr den Akku in der Hand, der eine Kapazität von 48 Wattstunden aufweist.

Unter der Haube steckt je nach Modell der Intel Core i5-8250U oder der Intel Core i7-8550U, bei denen es sich in beiden Fällen um Chips aus der "Kaby Lake"-Refresh-Reihe handelt. Der i5 arbeitet bekanntermaßen mit einem Basistakt von 1,6 Gigahertz und erreicht per TurboBoost maximal 3,4 GHz, während der i7 mit seinen ebenfalls vier Kernen einen Basistakt von 1,8 GHz vorweist und auf bis zu 4,0 GHz beschleunigen kann. Je nach Modell sind acht oder 16 Gigabyte schneller Arbeitsspeicher sowie SSDs mit 256 oder 512 Gigabyte an Bord.
