AMDs mobile Prozessoren waren einfach zu lahm, sie entwickelten viel Wärme, und weil sie viel Strom fraßen, drückten sie die Akkulaufzeiten von Notebooks extrem. Da drängt sich natürlich die Idee auf, die neu entwickelten Ryzen-CPUs für PCs in einer abgewandelten Version in Notebooks zu pflanzen. Doch bis zur CES 2018 hatte AMD keine Ryzen-Modelle mit dem für Notebooks nötigen Grafikchip im Programm. Doch kürzlich hat AMD zwei Ryzen-Prozessoren für Notebooks vorgestellt: den Ryzen R7 2700U und den Ryzen R5 2500U. Wie seine Prozessoren für Desktop-PCs hat AMD auch die Notebook-Chips in mehrere Serien unterteilt: R7 ist die schnellste Reihe, R5 die mittlere, die Einstiegsserie R3 gibt es (noch) nicht. Bei der vierstelligen Typennummer gilt wie bei Intel: größer gleich schneller. Der Zusatz „U“ steht für Ultrabooks – auf diese Kategorie zielen die ersten Ryzen-Notebook-Prozessoren. Die dürfen natürlich nur sparsam am Akku nuckeln, laut AMD begnügen sie sich mit 15 Watt. Dieses Jahr sollen weitere Prozessorvarianten folgen, vermutlich auch mit höherer Leistungsaufnahme und mehr Tempo durch höhere Taktfrequenzen.

Auf den ersten Blick arbeiten die neuen Ryzen-Notebook-Prozessoren mit vergleichsweise niedrigen Taktfrequenzen: Der R5 2500U werkelt mit 2,0 Gigahertz, der R7 2700U mit 2,2 Gigahertz. Allerdings laufen gleich vier Kerne mit diesem Tempo, und bei hohem Leistungsbedarf taktet der Ryzen auch einzelne Kerne hoch – auf bis zu 3,6 Gigahertz (R5 2500U) oder bis zu 3,8 Gigahertz (R7 2700U). Das schaffen unter den sparsamen 15-Watt-Prozessoren nur noch zwei Intel-CPUs der 8000er-Serie („Kaby Lake Refresh“). Neben deutlich mehr Leistung sollen die Ryzen-Notebooks auch viel länger durchhalten: Bei der Video-Wiedergabe etwa schafft der Akku im Vergleich mit einem älteren AMD-Notebook fast die doppelte Laufzeit – so die Theorie.

In den USA starten die Preise bei 1499 Dollar, aber nach oben ist die Preisskala weit offen, bestimmt durch CPU und Speicherausbau.Die Akkulaufzeit wird mit bis zu 17 Stunden angegeben und schlägt damit Apples professionelle Laptops um Längen, die zehn Stunden versprechen. Im Tablet-Modus, ohne Akku im Bodenteil, werden bis zu fünf Stunden angegeben. Die Angaben müssen sich aber in der Realität noch beweisen.Die Gewichtsangaben variieren vom Einsteigermodell bis zur vollausgebauten Maschine zwischen 1533 Gramm und 1642 Gramm beim kleinen Modell und durchgängig 1,90 kg für das 15-Zoll-Modell. Apples MacBook Pro mit 15 Zoll kommt auf vergleichsweise günstige 1,83 kg.
