Gurgaon, 22 November 2020: It was an eco-friendly Diwali celebration for the students of Amity Global – an IGCSE school in Gurugram – as they made colourful diyas, bandhanwar and paper lanterns to observe the festival at home.

The process of making diyas with wheat flour dough was explained online to the students of Grade 2 and they practised the art to make their own pieces. The students painted and decorated the diyas to make them more appealing. Their instructor also demonstrated the process of crafting candles with water, oil, cotton, plastic sheet, glitter and colours.

To put their families in festive moods, Amity’s learners decorated their homes with traditional paper crafts that brought out their creativity while also validating their intentions of celebrating an eco-friendly Diwali.

Another highlight of virtual Diwali festivities was an activity that involved making coconut sweets at home. Students and teachers came together for a virtual meeting on MS Teams and they made laddoos for their families. The session was led by Ms. Aparna Shastry, the homeroom teacher of Grade 4 at Amity Global School, Gurgaon.

All in all, the students did celebrate an environment-friendly Diwali. They displayed their understanding of the fact that crackers cause pollution and are certainly not required for a festival – there are ways to make a day cheerful without bringing in noise and fumes.

Parents have also expressed their delight with the Diwali celebration conducted by AGS Gurgaon. One of them says, “My daughter really enjoyed participating in the arts and crafts activity organised by the school. She made 10 lanterns and not only decorated our own house with them but also gifted a couple of pieces to her cousin.
