Greyhounds are born to race. By birth, they have a nature to chase while having little patience. Hence they must undergo training that will help them to settle down.

Greyhounds usually turn big when they are brought to adoption centres. They are considered retired for a racing course when they turn 3 or 4 years old. However, they have an inbuilt nature like chewing, scratching, nipping and jumping around for no reason. This is the time when they require training. Retired racing greyhounds receive basic training in the centres, but they must be trained differently to fit in the new environment when they are rehomed. The training program covers various areas that make greyhounds an excellent pet when followed.

Getting started with the training
Phase 1: Cue Training
Cue training is the master training that rewards with multiple benefits. This training helps the dogs from the greyhound adoption program behave while creating a communication bond with their owners. Also, eye contact is crucial for understanding their needs and desires. It is followed by treats, petting, following, etc. Cue training is also known as command training. The actions taught in this training appropriately signify its name. In this process, the owner and the pet build a strong relationship.

Phase 2: Capturing training
Retired racing greyhounds are an intelligent breed. They can be trained effortlessly when the correct forms are applied. Despite having a chasing nature, they are sweet, gentle and mild in their approach towards human beings. This breed is unfamiliar with human actions, so it might take some time to adjust. To illustrate, when you ask your dog to go to bed or direct them towards the bed, patiently wait until they reach the place. As they get near the bed, cue them again to sleep. Eventually, the next time you direct them, the dog will understand what you ask them to do.

Phase 3: Recalling training
It is a crucial stage of training where greyhounds will listen to your call. For their chasing nature, they must be controlled. A leash can help, but training a dog without a leash is more beneficial. Recall training will make the hound understand when the owners call them back. For that, a whistle is the best option.
