Microgynon is a combined oral contraceptive that is obtainable by prescription only; it contains levonorgestrel and ethynlestradiol as its active ingredients. Both of these synthetic hormones are created to be identical to the naturally occurring hormones that orchestrate the menstrual cycle – progesterone and estrogen. If the pill is administered correctly, Microgynon is a very effective pregnancy preventative – albeit not one without some side effects.

Microgynon works to prevent conception in three ways. The main manner in which conception is inhibited is by making the woman’s body think that an ovum has already occurred; in this way, ovulation does not occur because the ova do not mature or get released into the fallopian tubes. Secondly, it changes the environment of the uterine wall so that implantation cannot occur if fertilization does happen to occur. Thirdly, the mucous lining of the womb is thickened so that it is exceptionally difficult for the sperm to penetrate and make their way into the uterus. These are three ways that pregnancy is prevented by taking this oral contraceptive.

It is important to receive a full check up from your medical practitioner before beginning your course on Microgynon. Since it is a combination pill, all of the pills in the pack have the same hormones in them – there are twenty one pills per pack. The pills need to be taken starting from the very first day of your menstrual cycle and be taken daily thereafter. Should any pills be missed, they have to be taken within twelve hours to maintain protection against pregnancy. If this, too, is not done, then other contraceptive methods will be needed to ensure safety until normalcy is reached.

If you are pregnant or are breast-feeding, you should not be taking Microgynon. Also, if you suffer from sickle cell anemia, liver malfunctioning, unexplained vaginal bleeding, and metabolic disorders, or have known hypersensitivity to the ingredients of this pill, then you should avoid taking it. Other things to consider are if you have a history of breast cancer or deep vein thrombosis, also of pulmonary embolisms. Do not neglect to consider the ingredients of other medications if you are taking any, as their active ingredients may interact badly with the ingredients in this birth control pill. All changes in your drug regimens should be reported and discussed with your doctor. A very important note to remember is that oral contraceptives do not provide you with any form of protection against HIV/AIDS or any STDs.

Should you experience nausea, headaches, vomiting, gastric upsets, mood swings or fluctuations in your libido or body weight - do not worry; they are common side effects of Microgynon. Other, less common, side effects include: reduction in menstrual flow, increased heart attack or stroke risk, increased breast cancer risk and spotting between menses (could be experienced in the first few months of use). If you experience nausea, vomiting or bleeding, it could likely also indicate an over-dosage.
