Everyone at one time or another has bad breath…it’s just that they’re the last to know. The causes are many ranging from neglect to chronic disease. But regardless of the source, one leading dental expert says that there are steps everyone can take to eliminate or, at the very least, minimize bad breath.
“It’s helpful to have honest people around you who will let you know if your breath is unpleasant,” says Sean Mohtashami, DDS, whose 4M Dental Implant Canters can be found in Long Beach and Newport Beach, Calif as well as in Las Vegas. “Sometimes the problem is not as simple as remembering to brush your teeth after eating; sometimes it can be a sign of a medical condition like respiratory disorders and kidney, gum and liver disease.’

Among the culprits Mohtashami cites for causing bad breath:

NOT REGULARLY BRUSHING & FLOSSING TEETH — If you don't brush and floss your teeth daily, food particles and other contaminants will cause bacteria between your teeth, gums and tongue.
DRY MOUTH — This is a condition in which the salivary glands in your mouth don't make enough saliva to keep it wet. Since saliva neutralizes the acids produced by plaque and the dead cells that accumulate in your mouth dries up, your breath begins to stink. Dry mouth can be caused by dehydration, breathing through your mouth and certain medications.
SIDE EFFECT OF CERTAIN ILLNESSES - Bad breath is oftentimes associated with pneumonia, sinus infections and other respiratory illnesses as well as diabetes, post nasal drip, acid reflux and kidney and liver conditions.

Mohtashami offers the following advice on what you can do to minimize bad breath:

BRUSH. FLOSS, USE MOUTHWASH — Employ the 3-step model at least twice a day and after you finish eating: a) brush your teeth b) floss them c) rinse with antibacterial mouthwash. Remember to brush your tongue as well.
VISIT DENTIST — Regular check-ups are important and should be done at least twice/year. Your bad breath may stem from gum disease or some other latent problem that only a good dentist or periodontist will recognize.
DRINK WATER — This will help you avoid dry mouth, one of the biggest culprits behind bad breath.
CHEW SUGARLESS GUM — This helps moisten your mouth and eliminate food particles that might be lurking in your mouth.
STOP SMOKING — Besides smelling like tobacco, a less than desirable odor, smoking contributes to dry mouth.
ADJUST DIET — In addition to avoiding foods we all recognize as causing bad breath (e.g., onions and garlic), sugary foods also have been linked to bad breath.

“Be sure to ask your dentist to check your breath during your twice a year visits,” says Mohtashami. “Since bad breath can be due to a medical condition, you also should share that information with your family physician.’
