Summer time and early fall in US is a peak time for a lot of people to visit India. While for others, it’s a good time to have parents and relatives visit here to either spend time with kids who are off from school or for sightseeing since it’s a great weather for it in US. Most visitors to US purchase the visitors health insurance to protect from the risk of high medical expenses in case of sickness or accident. Unfortunately going through all the options and making a decision on a certain visitors’ insurance plan can be little overwhelming due to some of the legal terminology used by insurance providers to explain the terms of the plans and more importantly due to the wide range of options that are available to choose from.

Options:

Types of coverage: There are plans that provide “limited” coverage i.e. has specific dollar limits on certain services like per doctor visit, per day hospitalization etc. While there are other plans called “comprehensive” coverage plans in which case there are specific dollar limits on each individual medical service. The overall coverage is typically the only limit in that case.

Plans from US and India: You can buy plans either from US or India based companies. The plans from India are typically all comprehensive plans until a certain age limit. Few plans from India have “sub-limits” (same as “Limited” coverage plans in US) beyond a certain age of the traveler. The plans from India are generally cheaper than the ones from US. Most of plans from India however require you to pay up-front for outpatient services and get them reimbursed from India. While most of the comprehensive plans in US provide the option of direct billing even for the outpatient services since they usually have a tie-up with PPO networks.

Pre-existing condition coverage: There are some plans that cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions. It is a good practice to call the insurance company (once you shortlist a few) to exactly understand what is and isn’t covered if you are buying the insurance to protect against medical expenses for conditions that may arise due to pre-existing conditions.

Deductible, Amount of total coverage and co-insurance options are some of the things that need to be considered during the selection.
